Week 6: Submit to One Another out of reverence for Jesus

LOOKING BACK
Family Time (15 mins)
  • Vision: Invite someone to share your Lifegroup’s vision.
  • Connect question: Who is someone in your life you have submitted yourself to/come under their leadership? What was that experience like?
  • Announcements (see epicentre.org/events)
  • God-story Sharing (5 min): (something you can ask people to sign up to do ahead of time) have one person share the way they've seen God move in their life lately. End in having someone else do a short prayer of thanks & blessing for that person.

LOOKING UP
Worship (25 minutes)

Scripture Discussion (25-30 mins)
Either get into small groups of 3-4, or stay as a large group. Have a few people read it out loud.

Ephesians 5:21-27, NLT
21 And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. 24 As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.
25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault.

Questions
Verses 22-27 concern wives and husbands, but they are an application of verse 21 ‘submit to one another out of reverence to Christ’. As you think about this theme of submitting to one another:
  • What stands out to you from this passage? How does the author (Apostle Paul) invite us to live and treat one another?
  • What do we learn about submission from Jesus?
  • What’s a takeaway for you personally from this scripture about submitting to one another?

Sharing & prayer
Get into small groups of 3-4 if you haven’t already. Have everyone share:
What are you thankful for? What do you need God’s help in? How can we pray for you to live out mutual submission in your life?

Pray for each other. Ask God for a scripture, word of encouragement, etc for each other when you pray. If people aren’t comfortable sharing or praying, that is totally okay!
