January 27, 2005
Mrs. Lopez, a single parent, has raised five wonderful children whose ages range from five years old to twelve years old. Four of the five children are currently enrolled in the “6 to 6” program at Perkins Elementary. Mrs. Lopez has gone through some hard times. She has not been able to maintain a steady job due to the lack of job opportunities that exist within the San Diego area. She is currently getting help from welfare. The money that she does make goes to her rent, bills and accessories that her children need. She said, “Sometimes it’s hard for me to get everything paid. I don’t know what I would do if the “6 to 6” program wasn’t available to me. I would have to sacrifice bills and not pay them for the simple fact that I would have to pay for childcare so that someone could take care of my kids.”
Mrs. Lopez is a hard working parent who has achieved a lot of success and she thanks the “6 to 6” program for helping her get through some emotional times. This past Christmas Mrs. Lopez was sad over the fact that she did not have money to buy her four children Christmas presents. One day when Mrs. Lopez picked up her children from the “6 to 6” program, the supervisor informed Mrs. Lopez that all of her children would be receiving a special gift from the “6 to 6” program at Perkins Elementary. Mrs. Lopez had a huge smile on her face. Mrs. Lopez thanked everyone and said, “Thank you. You guys are awesome.” The happiness and excitement that Mrs. Lopez and her children had is worth all of the hard work that we put into the “6 to 6” program. The “6 to 6” program is more than just a program that helps parents out with their children’s homework. It is participating in special activities and being involved in recreational sports. The main goal of the “6 to 6” program is to help families in need; whether it is free childcare, emotional support, self-confidence etc… Mrs. Lopez ended the interview by saying, “Thank you for all of your help and support. I don’t know where my life would be if the program didn’t offer these services for my children. Not only are my children safe. I don’t have to worry about them being associated in gangs, violence, etc… The “6 to 6” program is fantastic. Thank you so much.” |
