East County Counseling, Alternatives to Smoking Print E-mail

November 13, 2007

Harmonium East County Counseling has been off to a great start this year continuing with some old contracts and beginning some new ones. One new program initiated this year in collaboration with the Grossmont Union High School District is entitled Alternatives to Smoking (A.T.S.). A.T.S. is a one week, eight hour group for students who have received a suspension at their school due to possession of cigarettes. This group equips the students with specific knowledge on the effects of tobacco on the body and educates them on decision making and life skills. This informative group prompts the students to think about how smoking cigarettes affects their lives now and in the future. One student, after completing this group, went out of his way and rode his skateboard back the following week to inform our Harmonium therapist that he had quit smoking. We are seeing great results from this group and we expect it to continue to be a great success.
