1/2010 - Math Lesson in Disguise at Loma Portal Klassic Kids Print E-mail

Klassic Kids at Loma Portal have been raising funds for their special events. Every Wednesday all of the children at Loma Portal Elementary look forward to a special treat after school, "The Ice Cream Shop."  kk-lp-icecreamshop1Students, teachers, and parents flock to the Klassic Kids Ice Cream Stand to purchase their favorite treat. Children begin asking for their favorite ice cream sandwich, fudgecicle, snow cone, ice cream bar, or cone and the Klassic Kids Junior Counselors step up to the counter to serve them.

Site Director Candy Snell says "The Ice Cream Shop is a threefold educational lesson for the students. They learn to apply the mathematics they have learned in class as they must add and subtract to make change. Multiplication is needed when people order more than one ice cream, and the students learn about profit and loss." "The cooperation and interaction between the children is astounding," says Program Assistant Mary Chinchillas.kk-lp-icecreamshop2

The goal for the Klassic Kids is a summer trip to Disneyland, so the children can see how their hard work benefits them. This will teach them to pursue and achieve their own long range goals. The teachers at Loma Portal, who also buy ice cream, love the program and say it reinforces so many skills. It is a lesson in good manners and customer service as they serve up fun and good community relations.
